My daughter recently shared with me that she went to a medium. What should she do to reverse any negative spiritual effects? I advised her to go to confession and attend one of your deliverance sessions. Anything else?

It’s great that she shared that with you. It suggests you two have an open relationship. Have you not discussed with her such things in the past? Today, young people are regularly exposed to these kinds of occult practices which are now thought to be normal or even beneficial. Parents today need to be proactive in warning their young children about such dangerous evils in our society.

Your recommendations were excellent. Yes, a good confession is the best remedy. Consulting mediums is the serious sin of divination which is explicitly called an “abomination” in the Sacred Scriptures (Dt 18:10-12) and directly condemned in the Catholic Catechism (CCC #215-217). It is also good, as you recommended, to attend a deliverance session and/or say deliverance prayers such as the “Auxilium Christianorum” prayers and/or some of our SMC deliverance prayers on our website/APP such as the “Against Sorcery Prayer” or “Breaking Unholy Ties, Curses, Spells, Seals and Consecrations” to break any unholy bond with the medium or related spells. See: www.catholicexorcism.org.

Some people have reported engaging in divination only one time resulting in a serious demonic problem, and other times people engaged in divination multiple times without any apparent demonic harassment. In either case, the action is a serious sin against the first commandment and always an opening to the Evil One.
Going forward, she should, of course, live a holy virtuous life of sacramental integrity which is the best remedy. However, if there are signs of a lingering demonic presence, then consulting one’s local priest is advised.
