Exorcist Diary #398: 15 Signs A House has Demons

Some will claim that their house has demons. It might be the case. This is particularly true if some great evil has taken place in the house, much like when demons claim ownership of a person who has committed great sins. Houses can become infested with demons after such incidents as occult rituals, rituals summoning demons, satanism and witchcraft, abortions, child abuse, murders and genocides, drug houses, human trafficking, and pagan burial grounds, to name but a few.

It is important not to see demons "under every rock." Strange things and noises can happen in houses, especially old ones. Nevertheless, there are some common signs of a demonic presence:

*Horrible smells like a rotting dead animal

*Great temperature drops in areas of the house; most of the house will be a

comfortable temperature and isolated spots will be freezing

*Doors and windows inexplicably closing and opening

*Electronics going haywire

*Dogs howling in a frightened tone

*Objects moving without explanation or disappearing

*Thumping and banging sounds which have no apparent origin

*Globes of light crossing the room

*Dark shadowy figures or even "shadow men" appearing

*People being inexplicably shoved or pushed, including on stairs

*Whistling or ugly voices calling to people

*An overwhelming sense of fear and/or nausea when entering

*Messages to "Stop" (if prayers are being said) or "Get Out" conveyed perhaps

scrawled on a mirror or heard verbally

*A feeling one's body is being touched or even scratched or bruised

*A sense of demons pressing on one's chest and paralyzing the person

These are but a few. Again, it is important not to overreact. Some of these can have a natural cause. But if there are a group of these symptoms together with an evil history of the house, the situation should warrant further investigation.

Priests should be trained to diagnose and recognize signs of a true demonic presence. In one case, a house was massively infested with demonic symptoms and the priest responded to the family's terrified pleas by asking if they had mice. Not a pastoral response. No one is more empowered to liberate an infested space than a Catholic priest and we should be prepared to do so. A sure sign that house was truly infested is when the priest exorcizes the house and all the symptoms abruptly and permanently cease.

But if a person with a strong demonic affliction is in the house, similar symptoms can occur. In this case, the person brings the demons into the house. The discernment challenge is this: is the problem with the house or with the person? We would then ask such questions: do similar problems happen in other locations where the person goes? Did the problems start when the person came to the house or did the previous owners have the same problems? Sometimes it is actually both: a person is afflicted and the house has demons.

The Good News is that our experience suggests that houses can be freed from demonic infestation rather quickly, in most cases. The ideal is to have a priest exorcize the house using the Church's rite to liberate spaces. A house blessing is good but I find it preferable to bless and exorcize the space. I usually don't find it necessary to have Masses said in the house. And, of course, all evil being done in the house must cease, plus confession and absolution for any related sins is critical, if this is possible (e.g. this is not possible when previous owners, who invited in the demons, have passed).

On our APP/website under "Deliverance Prayers for the Laity" see "Deliverance for the Home Prayer." This ritual is provided by our brother exorcists in the Philippines for use in absence of a priest. They recommend it be said by the owner(s) and head of the family with the family joining in the prayer. It utilizes such common sacramentals as: holy water, blessed oil, salt, and candles, crucifix and more. As always, it is rarely "one and done." Repeated sessions praying with perseverance and trust in the Lord are usually needed.

Ultimately, the formerly infested space is claimed for "Christ Our Savior!" It does not belong to the Evil One. It belongs to Jesus and we ask that his holy angels come and stand guard over our home and our family.
