Exorcist Diary #399: Was My Bench Cursed?

I often pray at night when all the world is dark and silent. It is easier to find some extended time to pray when all are asleep. Blessed Conchita, Mexican mystic, author and mother of nine, would wait until all her children were asleep to pray and write. She was amazingly prolific.

But a recent night's prayer was unusual. Rather than being a time of peace, I felt greatly agitated, for no obvious reason. I could barely sit still; I was completely distracted; and the prayer time actually felt destructive. I left wondering if I should really be praying at night at all. Something was really off.

I could not immediately discern anything that would cause such a negative downturn. Although there was one thing different about that night's prayer. My usual prayer bench was not available so I used one that had arrived from an outside source. I had later heard that the person, who had made the substitute bench, may have been consistently involved in some immoral behaviors.

Was it the bench that disrupted my prayer? Was it cursed? So I took some holy water and doused it. I then said deliverance prayers over it and explicitly commanded any evil spirits to leave. Also, I lifted any curses that might be attached. The next night I sat on the bench and prayed. It was fine. Subsequently sessions continued to be fine. All back to normal. Hmmm...

It is easy to overreact and see demons and curses under every rock. But demons do exist and so do evil curses. While the fervent follower of Jesus is largely protected, such evil forces can certainly cause a disturbance and be the cause of a demonic harassment. The fact that the bench had been in questionable spiritual hands and that the disturbance left after being exorcized are strong signs of the presence of such a curse.

The takeaway? It is always good to have holy water available. Exorcists regularly experience its effectiveness against evil. Water conveys physical life. The Church's blessing conveys spiritual life. Demons are death dealers and they cast out by Jesus who is "The Life."

Most important, demons and curses can harass the faithful but not overcome them. One night's uncomfortable prayer and a little holy water reminded me once again of who is the Author of Life and who is Lord. And now I have a bench that is "scrubbed" clean and a solid part of the chapel.
