Exorcist Diary #401: Earnest Money of Hell & Heaven

A woman came to me who had practiced witchcraft for a dozen years. She had started her own coven and had all the paraphernalia including a large cache of books on the occult. The first thing that struck me was the dark cloud around her and the gloom on her face. When I mentioned it, she said she was aware of it and agreed that it was likely the result of her life in the occult. She said the practice of witchcraft kept promising great positive fruits but never delivered. Now she was coming for help.

St. Catherine of Siena, in her famous work The Dialogue, wrote about the "earnest money of hell." She said that God revealed to her that those who are mired in evil and sin already, in this life, begin to taste the fruits of evil. In hell souls are estranged from God, the source of all joy and goodness. They are also tormented inwardly by their own conscience. They live in despair and a pervasive spiritual darkness. Souls immersed in evil and sin already have the seed of hell planted inside of them. Even now, they begin to taste its awful fruits.

The Good News is that in this life we can also experience, according to St. Catherine, the "earnest money of heaven." As we are baptized and live a life of faith in Jesus Christ in the Church, we already begin "eternal life." It starts now in seed form and fully blossoms in the next life. The life of heaven is one of love, joy and peace. Our consciences are at peace. God's eternal life resides in us. This is why holy people often radiate a sense of joy and peace: they already have one foot in heaven!

Satan is miserable and he cannot give what he does not have. He and his minions promise great things but only give a life of darkness, misery and despair, which those who follow his designs increasingly taste. On the other hand, God's eternal life is a free gift which He earnestly desires to share with us even now, if we let Him. More than a few who have turned away from the darkness of occult into the life of faith in Jesus have personally experienced this profound conversion and the foretaste of heaven.

As the psalmist tells us: "Taste and see how good the Lord is!" (Ps 34:9).
