Exorcist Diary #405: Halloween Parties?

An exorcist learns not to trifle with evil. While we recognize and know firmly that Jesus is Lord, we do not underestimate what Satan can and will do if given the chance. If given an opening, he will inflict as much damage as God allows, which can be considerable. And if an exorcist gives Satan an opening in an exorcism session or, God forbid in his own life, it can get quite ugly very fast.

I was just invited to a halloween party and I was told it would be great fun. Halloween is actually All Hallows Eve, the night before the great feast of all saints. It is often corrupted to be a pagan celebration including a glorification of evil. Although I have heard of truly holy gatherings on All Hallows Eve, for example, the young dress up as their favorite saints. But more often, young people on halloween don images of witches, demons, skeletons, ghosts, and the like.

I declined the invitation. An exorcist does not trifle with evil and certainly does not glorify it. In an exorcist's regular interaction with demons, he "tastes" a bit of hell. It is truly unspeakably evil. Similarly, the Catholic mystic-saints who have been given a "graced" experience of hell say it is awful beyond description. We ought not to underestimate such evil.

Would donning an image of evil open someone to its influence at some level? I expect so. When we invoke the saints, we invite their holy persons into our lives. Then why wouldn't taking on images of evil do the same with evil spirits?
