Exorcist Diary #400: Defeating Demons at Death

At the moment of death, some people have reported being tempted and harassed by Satan.  A famous case was St. Martin of Tours.  At his death in 397 AD, he saw Satan present and he exclaimed: “Why do you stand there, you bloodthirsty brute?  Murderer, you will not have me for your prey.  Abraham is welcoming me into his embrace.”  With that, he died and passed on to the Kingdom of God. 

Not uncommonly, people also report receiving special graces from the Lord at the time of death.  We believe all are given a final chance to choose Jesus and eternal life with him, despite one’s history.  Many report receiving special graces at this moment to illumine the reality of their final choice.  As one soul reported, “Jesus appeared to me and asked if I wanted to live with him, or did I want to live with the demons?”   

One of our staff members shared a recent deathbed experience:

I went to the hospital to pray at the bedside of my friend’s mom who was dying. I brought the crucifix with the saints’ relics we use. First, I sprinkled holy water generously around the room. I explained to my friends that demons sometimes tempt and torment the dying person in their final hours. Then I asked my friend if she wanted to bless her mom with the crucifix which she did, while we invoked the saints’ intercession and the Litany of the Saints. Next, I led them through praying the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, with the crucifix lying on her chest. They did not really know the Chaplet but quickly picked it up. In the fifth and last decade, which I told them symbolized when Jesus’ side was pierced and blood and water gushed out, her mom flatlined!! The team of nurses and doctors rushed in. We all continued praying as she passed. I then felt a graced exaltation of the spirit. It was truly the grace of a happy death.  I am confident that Jesus welcomed her into the Kingdom.

            While the Evil One is intent on our destruction, he is dust compared to the power of the Son of God, Jesus Christ.  At the moment of death, whether we are great saints or “normal” Christians, we rebuke the Evil One and commend our souls to Jesus.  Having friends and family pray with us during our final hours is a special grace.  But regardless, Jesus desires to welcome us all into his Kingdom of joy and peace. We turn our hearts to him in faith and perhaps repeat his own words when he died, “Father, into your hands, I commend my spirit.”
