  • Deacon Led Deliverance Session

< Back Deacon Led Deliverance Session (General Format) Guidelines: 1. Entire session should last on average 20-40 minutes. 2. Wear clerics (or alb) with purple stole. 3. Deacons are ordained clerics and can pray In Persona Ecclesiae (in the person of the Church). They do not pray In Persona Christi, as do priests. They lead the people in prayer. 4. Deacons should not use imprecatory prayers, ie., directly addressing demons and commanding them to leave. They should use deprecatory prayers and invoke God (Jesus, BVM, etc) and ask Him to cast them out. They can make any prayer a deprecatory prayer by simply adjusting the prayer so it is addressed to God. 5. Deacons should not pray the Rite of Exorcism or the Leo XIII prayers. They should not address demons directly, such as asking them their names. If the individual manifests to the extent that a demonic presence and voice comes forward, then that person should be referred to an exorcist. Ask the person to stop manifesting and come back to consciousness. Bring the session to a close with a gentle prayer such as the Rosary or Our Father. 6. Deacons should not underestimate their ministry and the power of the Church praying. The Church has complete authority over demons, given directly by Jesus. Casting out demons is one of the major tasks given to the Church by Jesus himself, in continuation of His ministry. I. Welcome/Greeting II. Perimeter Prayer (Deacon) Lord Jesus Christ, in Your love and mercy establish a perimeter of protection around N. and myself and all our loved ones, those who pray for us and their loved ones. May the Holy Angels guard him/her/us and all our possessions, establishing a perimeter of protection around N., rendering him/her/us immune from any kind of demonic influence. I ask that no demonic bondage, door, demonic entity, portal, astral projection or disembodied spirit may enter the space of 100 yards in all directions of him/her/us. I ask that any demons within this vicinity or any that should try to enter here be rendered deaf, dumb, and blind; that You would strip them of all weapons, armor, power, illusions, and authority; that You would bind, rebuke and disable them from communicating or interacting with each other in any way. Remove them, sending them directly to the foot of Thy Cross. Jesus, Son of the Most High, I ask this in Your Glorious and Most Holy Name. Amen. (Adapted from Fr Chadd Ripperger, Deliverance Prayers: For Use By The Laity, p. 39) III. Gospel Reading (Deacon) Reading from: John 1:1-14 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life and this life was the light of the human race, the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. A man named John was sent from God. He came for testimony, to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came to be through him, but the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him. But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his name, who were born not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man's decision but of God. And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father's only Son, full of grace and truth. IV. Lifting Curses and Rejecting Evil Spirits (Prayed by the Afflicted Person and Witnessed by the Deacon) At the discretion of the deacon, the afflicted person may explicitly reject any types or names of demons or related curses or sinful behaviors or give voice to any necessary forgiveness. In which case, the individual will want to use the prayers to lift curses, against generational curses, against Freemasonry curses or whatever is applicable. See section at the end of this document entitled “Potential Deliverance Prayers for the Afflicted Person to Recite” for some of these prayers, e.g. Prayer for Breaking Curses of the Occult, Prayer Against Sorcery, Prayer to Remove Generational Spirits, Deliverance Prayers for People or Places, Prayer to Break the Freemasonic Curse, Breaking Bonds from Previous Illicit Sexual Partners, An Act of Forgiveness. There are other similar kinds of prayers in the APP: “Catholic Exorcism.” The afflicted person will recite these prayers. After each prayer, the deacon will say a witness prayer, such as: In the name of Jesus Christ, I witness your rejection of these demons/evil spirits, and I ask God to cast them out. May the Blood of Jesus wash over you and cleanse you of these and all evil spirits and all evil bonds and attachments. The afflicted persons may also be asked to confess the Faith and to profess that they commit themselves to God and to Jesus, such as reciting the Nicene Creed: I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, one in Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. The afflicted person may want to make a short consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary, such as: My Queen and my Mother, I give myself entirely to you; and to show my devotion to you, I consecrate to you this day and every day my eyes, my ears, my mouth, my heart, my whole being without reserve. Wherefore, good Mother, as I am your own, keep me, guard me, as your precious possession. Amen. Prayer for Breaking Curses of the Occult (Deacon) We ask God Almighty, through the Most Precious Blood of Jesus, to break any and all evil curses, pacts, spells, seals, hexes, vexes, triggers, trances, vows, demonic blessings, or any other demonic bondages sent against N. or us, or any of our loved ones or any of our possessions; May God bind them all and break them in the Name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. (3x) Finally, at the end of all these prayers of renunciation and faith, the Deacon ends it by praying: Heavenly Father, N. renounces the Evil One and his demons and all their sinful works and empty promises. He/She cries out to You seeking Your Mercy, Healing, and Protection. I ask our Blessed Mother and all the Saints of Heaven to intercede with me as I beseech You: hear the humble prayers of N. and, in accordance with your most holy will, grant N. the Healing and Peace only You can bring. I ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. V. Deliverance Prayers (Deacon) **Optional deliverance prayer may be used: "Minor Exorcism of St. John Chrysostom" adapted for deacons. See below** Deliverance Prayer Let us pray. God of Heaven and earth, God of the Angels and Archangels, God of the Patriarchs and Prophets, God of the Apostles and martyrs, God of confessors and virgins, God Who have power to bestow life after death and rest after toil; for there is no other God than You, nor can there be another true God beside You, the Creator of all things visible and invisible, Whose Kingdom is without end; we humbly entreat Your glorious Majesty to deliver us [and …. (Person and/or places)] by Your might from every influence of the accursed spirits, from their every evil snare and deception, and to keep us from all harm; through Christ Our Lord. All. Amen. Deacon. From the snares of the devil. All. Lord, deliver us. Deacon. That You help Your Church to serve You in security and freedom. All. We beg You to hear us. Deacon. That You humble the enemies of holy Church. All. We beg You to hear us. Prayer Invoking the Aid of Saint Michael the Archangel St. Michael the Archangel, illustrious leader of the heavenly army, defend us in the battle against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the world of darkness and the spirit of wickedness in high places. Come to the rescue of mankind, whom God has made in His own image and likeness, and purchased from Satan’s tyranny at so great a price. Holy Church venerates you as her patron and guardian. The Lord has entrusted to you the task of leading souls of the redeemed to heavenly blessedness. Entreat the Lord of peace to cast Satan down under our feet, so as to keep him from further holding mankind captive and doing harm to the Church. Carry our prayers up to God’s throne, that the mercy of the Lord may quickly come and lay hold of the beast, the serpent of old, Satan and his demons, casting him in chains into the abyss, so that he can no longer seduce the nations. Deliverance Prayer Lord, have Mercy. God, Our Lord, King of Ages, All powerful and Almighty, You Who made everything and who transformed everything simply by Your Will. You Who in Babylon changed into dew the flames of the “seven-times hotter” furnace and protected and saved the three holy children. You are the doctor and the physician of our souls. You are the salvation of those who turn to You. We beseech You to make powerless, banish, and drive out every diabolic power, presence, and machination; every evil influence, malefice, or evil eye and all evil actions aimed against Your servant... [persons]… and in this place …..[places]... where there is envy and malice, give us an abundance of goodness, endurance, victory and charity. O Lord, You who love us, we beg You to reach out Your powerful hands and Your most high and mighty arms and come to our aid. Help us, who are made in your image; send the Angel of Peace over us, to protect us body and soul. May God keep at bay and vanquish every evil power, every poison or malice invoked against us by corrupt and envious people. Then, under the protection of Your authority may we sing in gratitude, “The Lord is my salvation; whom should I fear? I will not fear evil because Thou art with me, my God, my strength, my powerful Lord, Lord of Peace, Father of all Ages. Deliverance Prayer To be said while showing the Cross and making the Sign of the Cross with it: + Let God arise and let his enemies be scattered; and let those who hate Him Flee before His Presence. As smoke vanishes, so let them vanish; and as wax melts before the fire, so let the demons perish before the presence of those who love God and who sign themselves with the Sign of the Cross and say in gladness: Hail, most precious and life-giving Cross of the Lord, for You drive away the demons by the power of our Lord Jesus Christ who was crucified on You and who went down to Hell and trampled on the power of the devil, and gave us You, His venerable Cross, for driving away all enemies. O most precious and life-giving Cross of the Lord, help us, with all the Saints and Angels throughout the ages. R. Amen. VI. Closing Prayers (Deacon) Prayer Against Retaliation Lord Jesus Christ, in your love and mercy, pour Your Precious Blood over us so that no demon or disembodied spirit may retaliate against us. Mary, surround us with your mantle, blocking any retaliating spirits from having any authority over us. St. Michael, surround us with your shield, so that no evil spirit may take revenge on us. Queen of Heaven and St. Michael, send down the legions of angels under your command to fight off any spirits that would seek to harm us. All you saints of heaven, impede any retaliating spirit from influencing us. Lord, You are the Just Judge, the avenger of the wicked, the Advocate of the Just, we beg in Your mercy, that all we ask of Mary, the angels and the saints of heaven be also granted to all our loved ones, all of our possessions, those who pray for us and their loved ones, that for Your Glory’s sake, we may enjoy Your perfect protection. Amen. (adapted from Chadd, Laity, p. 37) Cleansing Prayer Lord Jesus, thank you for sharing with us Your wonderful ministry of healing and deliverance. Thank you for the healing we have seen and experienced today. But we realize that the sickness and evil we encountered are more than our humanities can bear. So, cleanse us of any sadness, negativity, or despair that we may have picked up during the course of this ministry. If our ministry has tempted us to anger, impatience, or lust, cleanse us of those temptations and replace them with love, joy and peace. If any evil spirits have attached themselves to us or oppress us in any way, spirits of earth, air, fire, or water, of the netherworld or of nature, and all spirits not of the Holy Spirit, we pray that these evil spirits would depart now and go straight to Jesus Christ, for Him to deal with as He wills. Come, Holy Spirit, renew us, fill us anew with Your power, love and joy. Strengthen us where we have felt weak and clothe us with Your light. Fill us with life. And Lord Jesus, please send your holy angels to minister to us and our families and to guard and protect us from all sickness, harm, and accidents and guard us on a safe trip home, and grant us a peaceful night’s rest. We praise You now and forever. Heavenly Father, in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we pray that the cleansing power of the precious blood of Your Son come upon us right now. Purify us and wash us clean with the blood of Jesus from the top of our heads down to the very soles of our feet. Let this blood penetrate the very marrow of our bones to cleanse us from any entanglement from whatever evil spirits we have come in contact with during the course of our intercession. Anoint us with the gifts of the Holy Spirit and refresh our body, soul, and spirit, and may the sign of Your holy cross drive away all evil spirits from us. In the Name of the Father + and the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. (Sprinkle all present with Holy Water.) VII. Wrap-up/Final Blessing ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ POTENTIAL DELIVERANCE PRAYERS FOR THE AFFLICTED PERSON TO RECITE (see section IV) Prayer for Breaking Curses of the Occult I bind in the Most Precious Blood of Jesus any and all evil curses, pacts, spells, seals, hexes, vexes, triggers, trances, vows, demonic blessings, voodoo, or any other demonic bondages sent against me, or any of our loved ones or any of our possessions; I bind them all and break them in the Name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. (Thrice) Prayer Against Sorcery (From the Greek-Orthodox Ritual) Kyrie eleison. God, our Lord, king of ages, all-powerful and almighty, You who made everything and who transforms everything simply by Your will; You who in Babylon changed into dew the seven-times-hotter furnace and protected and saved three holy children; You are the doctor and physician of our souls. You are the salvation of those who turn to You. We beseech You to make powerless, banish, and drive out every diabolic power, presence, and machination; every evil influence, spell, or evil eye and all evil actions aimed against Your servants. Where there is envy and malice, give us an abundance of goodness, endurance, victory, and chastity. O Lord, You who love man, we beg You to reach out Your powerful hands and Your mighty arms and send the angels of peace over us, to protect us, body and soul. May he keep at bay and vanquish every evil power, every evil poison or malice invoked against us by corrupt and envious people. Then, under the protection of Your authority, may we sing in gratitude: The Lord is my salvation, whom shall I fear? I will not fear evil because You are with me, my God, my strength, my powerful Lord, Lord of peace, Father of all ages. Yes, Lord our God, have compassion on Your image, and save Your servants from every threat coming from the spell, and protect us by raising us above all evil. We ask You this through the intercession of our most blessed, glorious Lady, Mary ever Virgin, Mother of God, of the most splendid archangels, and all your saints. Amen. Prayer to Remove Generational Spirits Lord Jesus Christ, Incarnate Son of God the Father, Thou who has chosen to enter into human history by being carried in the womb of Thy Blessed Mother Mary, grant I beseech You, that any demons that may have been introduced into my generational line by any one of my ancestors may be blocked from passing to the subsequent generations. I ask You that if the evil spirit entered the generational line by the sin of one or more of my ancestors, that You would pardon them temporal punishment due to their sin and free us from the demon’s involvement in our lives. Blessed Virgin, we ask you to offer the Precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of your Son to God the Father in reparation for the sins of those ancestors who may have introduced any evil spirits into my generational line, as well as any subsequent sins that may have resulted from the evil spirits affecting those of the generational line. If any evil spirit has been introduced into my generational line as a result of a curse or malefice done by someone outside my family, I ask You to give me the grace to forgive them wholeheartedly and I ask You, Jesus to break the curse or malefice, if it is still in place. God the Father, I forgive them for any of the effects of their sin that they may have committed against my family line and for any damage it may have caused. Jesus, I ask You to forgive me of any sins that may be the result of any generational spirits in my family and I ask You to block any power the evil spirits may have gained in my generational line as a result of my own sin. Heal any damage in the lives of the members of my family as a result of the generational spirit. I bind and completely and utterly reject, with the full force of my will any sin or spiritual defect of mine as well as any temptation, allurements or power that any generational spirit may have over me as a result of my sin or the sin of any other person. I do this in the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary and in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Prayer to Break the Freemasonic Curse (Short Form) God the Father, Creator of heaven and earth, I come to You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son. I come as a sinner seeking forgiveness and cleansing from all sins committed against You, and others made in Your image. I honor my earthly father and mother and all of my ancestors of flesh and blood, and of the spirit by adoption and godparents, but I utterly turn away from and renounce all their sins. I forgive all my ancestors for the effects of their sins on me and my children. I confess and renounce all of my own sins. I renounce and rebuke Satan and every spiritual power of his affecting me and my family. I renounce and forsake all involvement in Freemasonry or any other lodge or craft by my ancestors and myself. In the name of Jesus Christ and by the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, I renounce and cut off Witchcraft, the principal spirit behind Freemasonry, and I renounce and cut off Baphomet, the Spirit of Antichrist and the spirits of Death, and Deception. I renounce the insecurity, the love of position and power, the love of money, avarice or greed, and the pride which would have led my ancestors into Masonry. I renounce all the fears which held them in Masonry, especially the fears of death, fears of men, and fears of trusting, in the name of Jesus Christ and by the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I renounce every position held in the lodge by any of my ancestors or myself, including "Master," "Worshipful Master," or any other. I renounce the calling of any man "Master," for Jesus Christ is my only Lord and master, and He forbids anyone else having that title. I renounce the entrapping of others into Masonry, and observing the helplessness of others during the rituals. I renounce the effects of Masonry passed on to me through any female ancestor who may or may not have felt distrusted and rejected by her husband as he entered and attended any lodge and refused to tell her of his secret activities. I also renounce all obligations, oaths and curses enacted by every female member of my family through any direct membership of all Women's Orders of Freemasonry, the Order of the Eastern Star, or any other Masonic or occultic organization. I renounce every evil spirit associated with Masonry and Witchcraft and all other sins, and I command in the name of Jesus Christ and by the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary for Satan and every evil spirit to be bound and to leave me now, touching or harming no-one, and go to the place appointed for you by the Lord Jesus, never to return to me or my family. I call on the name of the Lord Jesus to be delivered of these spirits, in accordance with Our Lord’s many promises. I ask to be delivered of every spirit of sickness, infirmity, curse, affliction, addiction, disease or allergy associated with these sins I have confessed and renounced. I surrender to God the Holy Spirit and to no other spirit all the places in my life where these sins have been. Holy Spirit, I ask that You show me anything else which I need to do or to pray so that I and my family may be totally free from the consequences of the sins of Masonry, Witchcraft, Mormonism and all related Paganism and Occultism. God the Father, I ask humbly for the blood of Jesus Christ, Thy Son and my Savior, to cleanse me from all these sins I have confessed and renounced, to cleanse my spirit, my soul, my mind, my emotions and every part of my body which has been affected by these sins. I also ask that by the grace of Jesus Christ and by the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary every cell in my body to come into divine order now, and to be healed and made whole as they were designed to, by my loving Creator, including restoring all chemical imbalances and neurological functions, controlling all cancerous cells, and reversing all degenerative diseases. I take to myself the whole armor of God in accordance with Ephesians Chapter Six, and rejoice in its protection as Jesus surrounds me and fills me with His Holy Spirit. I enthrone You, Lord Jesus, in my heart, for You are my Lord and my Savior, the source of eternal life. Thank you, God the Father, for Your mercy, Your forgiveness and Your love, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Breaking Bonds From Previous Illicit Sexual Partners In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, I break any ties between myself and all former sexual partners, (including N., N., N., etc...). I break all ties including any mental, emotional, spiritual and physical bonds with all former sexual partners, and anyone with whom they have had relations as well. I take back what I gave and I give back what I took. I ask God now to wash me in the blood of the Lamb and cleanse me from any stain of sin or attachment of any kind to these individuals. I also ask our Lord to free those former partners from any evil caused by these relationships. May St. Michael and the Holy Angels sever any bonds of sin and protect this person from all evil and harm. I pray that the Blessed Mother would spread her mantle of protection over us all now and always. An Act of Forgiveness (Note: Forgiveness does not mean that what the person did to harm someone was okay. It also does not mean the one hurt should have “warm feelings” about the other person. Rather, it is an act of the will to let go of the hurt and to will the good of the other. This is important. Demons feed off unforgiveness. Moreover, unforgiveness can dysfunctionally bond the person to the abuser and the one harmed can remain a perpetual victim, under the control of the abuser. Forgiveness allows the person to let go of the person who caused the harm, to be open to God’s healing, and to be set free.) Afflicted Person: In the name of Jesus Christ, I willingly forgive anyone who has hurt or harmed me (including N., N., N., etc...). I forgive him/her/them from the bottom of my heart and I ask God to bless him/her/them. Deacon: I witness your forgiveness. I ask God to heal any unforgiveness and any inner wounds and trauma. May God heal you and all those who have hurt you. May you be released from any dyfunctional attachments, be healed in your heart, and set free in the name of Jesus. In the name of Jesus may you be healed. In the name of Jesus, be at peace. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ **Optional Deliverance Prayer** Minor Exorcism of St. John Chrysostom (adapted for use by Deacons) O Eternal God, Who has redeemed the race of men from the captivity of the devil, deliver Your servant (handmaid) N. from all the working of unclean spirits. Command the evil and impure spirits and demons to depart from the soul and body of N. your servant (handmaid) and not to remain nor hide in him (her). Let them be + banished from this the creation of Your hands in Your own holy name and that of Your only begotten Son and of Your life-creating Spirit, so that, after being cleansed from all demonic influence, he (she) may live holy, godly, justly and righteously and may be counted worthy to receive the Holy Mysteries of Your only-begotten Son and our God with Whom Your are + blessed and glorified together with the all holy and good and life-creating Spirit now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen. O You Who has rebuked all unclean spirits and by the power of Your Word has banished the legion, come now, through Your only begotten Son upon this creature +, which You have fashioned in Your own image and deliver him (her) from the adversary that holds him (her) in bondage, so that, receiving Your mercy and becoming purified, he (she) might join the ranks of Your holy flock and be preserved as a living temple of the Holy Spirit and might receive the divine and holy Mysteries through the grace and compassion and loving kindness of Your only-begotten Son with Whom You are blessed together with Your all-holy and good and life-creating + Spirit now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen. We beseech You, O Lord, Almighty God, Most High, untempted, peaceful King. We beseech You Who has created the heaven and the earth, for out of You has issued the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, You Who had ordained that the four-footed and irrational beasts be under subjection to man, for You have subjected them. Lord, stretch out Your mighty hand and Your sublime and holy arm and in Your watchful care look down upon this Your creature and send down upon him (her) a + peaceful angel, a mighty angel, a guardian of soul and body, that will + rebuke and drive away every evil and unclean demon from him (her), for You alone are Lord, Most high, almighty and + blessed unto ages of ages. Amen. We make this great, divine, holy and awesome invocation and plea to You, O Lord for the devil’s expulsion, and that You rebuke him for his utter annihilation, that apostate! Lord, You Who are holy, beginning-less, frightful, invisible in essence, infinite in power and incomprehensible in your divinity, the King of glory and Lord Almighty, + Lord, rebuke the devil! You who composed all things well by your Word from nothingness into being; You who walk upon the wings of the air. + Lord rebuke the devil! You who calls forth the waters of the sea and pours it upon the face of all the earth. Lord of Hosts is Your name. + O Lord, rebuke the devil! You who are ministered to and praised by numberless heavenly orders and adored and glorified in fear by multitudes of angelic and archangelic hosts. + O Lord, rebuke Satan! You who are honored by the encircling Powers, the awesome six-winged and many-eyed Cherubim and Seraphim that cover their faces with two wings because of Your inscrutable and unseen divinity and with two wings cover their feet, lest they be seared by Your unutterable glory and incomprehensible majesty, and with two wings do fly and fill the heavens with their shouts heaven and earth are full of Your glory! + O Lord, rebuke the devil! You who came down from the Father’s bosom and, through the holy inexpressible, immaculate and adorable Incarnation from the Virgin, appeared ineffably in the world to save it and cast the devil down from heaven in Your authoritative power and showed the devil to be an outcast to every man. + O Lord, rebuke Satan! You who said to the sea, be silent, be still and instantly it was calmed at Your command. O Lord, rebuke the devil! You who made clay with Your immaculate spittle and refashioned the wanting member of the man built from birth and gave him his sight. O Lord, rebuke the devil! You who by Your word restored to life the daughter of the ruler of the synagogue and snatched the son of the widow out from the mouth of death and gave him whole and sound to his own mother. + O Lord, rebuke the Devil! You, Lord, who raised Lazarus the four-days dead from the dead, undecayed, as if not having died, and unblemished to the astonishment of many. + O Lord, rebuke Satan! You who destroyed the curse by the blow on Your face and by the lance in Your immaculate side lifted the flaming sword that guarded Paradise. + O Lord, rebuke the Devil, You who dried all tears from every face by the spitting upon Your precious expressed image. + O Lord, rebuke the Devil! You who set Your Cross as a support, the salvation of the world, to the Devil’s fall and the fall of all the angels under him. + O Lord, rebuke the devil! You, who spoke from your Cross and the curtain of the temple was torn in two, and the rocks were split and the tombs were opened and those who were dead from the ages were raised up. + O Lord, rebuke the Devil! You who by death put death to death and by rising granted life to all men. + O Lord, rebuke Satan! It is You who descended into Hades and opened its tombs and set free those held prisoner in it, calling them to Yourself; before You the gatekeepers of Hades shuddered when they saw You and, hiding themselves, vanished in the anguish of Hades. + O Lord, rebuke the devil! It is You, Christ our God Who arose from the dead and granted Your Resurrection to all men. + O Lord, rebuke Satan! You who in glory ascended into heaven to Your Father, sitting on the right of majesty upon the throne of glory. + O Lord, rebuke the Devil! You who shall come again with glory upon the clouds of heaven with Your holy angels to judge the living and the dead. + O Lord, rebuke the Devil! You Who has prepared for him unquenchable fire, the unsleeping worm and the outer darkness unto eternal punishment. + O Lord, rebuke the Devil! For before You all things shudder and tremble from the face of Your power and the wrath of Your warning upon him is uncontainable. + O Lord, rebuke Satan, by Your frightful name! Make him shudder, tremble, be afraid, depart, be utterly destroyed, be banished! He who fell from heaven and together with him all evil spirits: every evil spirit of lust, the spirit of evil, a day and nocturnal spirit, a noonday and evening spirit, a midnight spirit, an imaginative spirit, an encountering spirit, whether of the dry land or of the water, or one in a forest, or among the reeds, or in trenches, or in a road or a crossroad, in lakes, or streams, in houses, or one sprinkling in the baths and chambers, or one altering the mind of man. Make him depart + swiftly from this creature of Yours, O Creator Christ our God! And drive him from this servant (handmaid) of God N., from his (her) mind, from his (her) soul, from his (her) heart, from his (her) reins, from his (her) senses, from all his (her) members, that he (she) might become whole and sound and free, knowing You, O God, his (her) own Master and Creator of all things, You who gather together those who have gone astray and who gives them the seal of salvation through the rebirth and restoration of divine Baptism, so that he (she) may be counted worthy of Your immaculate, heavenly and awesome Mysteries and be united to Your true fold, dwelling in a place of pasture and nourished on the waters of repose, guided pastorally and safely by the staff of the + Cross unto the forgiveness of sins and life everlasting. For to + You belong all glory, honor, adoration and majesty together with Your beginningless + Father and all-holy, good and life-giving + Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. Previous Next

Amen (Parish Ritual, 168-170) Back to Top Blessing Epiphany Water Blessing of Epiphany Water: On the Eve of Epiphany (Approved by the Congregation of Sacred Rites, Dec. 6, 1890) (This blessing comes from the Orient, where the Church has long emphasized in her celebration of Epiphany the mystery of our Lord's baptism, and by analogy our baptism. This aspect is not neglected in western Christendom, although in practice we have concentrated on the visit of the Magi. Many years before the Latin Rite officially adopted the blessing of Epiphany water, diocesan rituals, notably in lower Italy, had contained such a blessing). 1. At the appointed time the celebrant, vested in white cope (if a bishop, the mitre is worn but removed during the prayers), and the deacon and subdeacon, vested in white dalmatic and tunic respectively, come before the altar. They are preceded by acolytes, who carry the processional cross and lighted candles (which are put in their proper place), and by the other clergy. A vessel of water and a container of salt are in readiness in the sanctuary.) First the Litany of the Saints is sung, during which time all kneel. After the invocation "That you grant eternal rest," etc. the celebrant rises and sings the following two invocations, the second in a higher key: V. That you bless + this water. R. We beg you to hear us. V. That you bless + and sanctify + this water R. We beg you to hear us. Then the chanters continue the litany up to and including the last Lord, have mercy. After this the celebrant chants Our Father the rest inaudibly until: P: And lead us not into temptation. All: But deliver us from evil. 2. Then the following psalms are sung: Psalm 28 P: Give to the Lord, you sons of God, * give to the Lord glory and praise, All: Give to the Lord the glory due His name; * adore the Lord in holy attire. P: The voice of the Lord is over the waters, the God of glory thunders, * the Lord, over vast waters. All: The voice of the Lord is mighty; * the voice of the Lord is majestic. P: The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars, * the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon. All: He makes Lebanon leap like a calf * and Sarion like a young wild bull. P: The voice of the Lord strikes fiery flames; the voice of the Lord shakes the desert, * the Lord shakes the wilderness of Cades. All: The voice of the Lord twists the oaks and strips the forests, * and in His temple all say, "Glory!" P: The Lord is enthroned above the flood; * the Lord is enthroned as king forever. All: May the Lord give strength to His people; * may the Lord bless his people with peace. P: Glory be to the Father. All: As it was in the beginning. Psalm 45 P: God is our refuge and our strength, * an ever-present help in distress. All: Therefore we fear not, though the earth be shaken and mountains plunge into the depths of the sea; P: Though its waters rage and foam * and the mountains quake at its surging. All: The Lord of hosts is with us; * our stronghold is the God of Jacob. P: There is a stream whose runlets gladden the city of God, * the holy dwelling of the Most High. All: God is in its midst; it shall not be disturbed; * God will help it at the break of dawn. P: Though nations are in turmoil, kingdoms totter, * His voice resounds, the earth melts away; All: The Lord of hosts is with us; * our stronghold is the God of Jacob. P: Come, see the deeds of the Lord, * the astounding things He has wrought on earth. All: He has stopped wars to the end of the earth; * the bow he breaks; He splinters the spears; He burns the shields with fire. P: Desist, and confess that I am God, * exalted among the nations, exalted upon the earth. All: The Lord of hosts is with us; * our stronghold is the God of Jacob. P: Glory be to the Father. All: As it was in the beginning. Psalm 146 P: Praise the Lord, for He is good; * sing praise to our God, for He is gracious; it is fitting to praise Him. All: The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem; * the dispersed of Israel He gathers. P: He heals the brokenhearted * and binds up their wounds. All: He tells the number of the stars; * He calls each by name. P: Great is our Lord and mighty in power; * to His wisdom there is no limit. All: The Lord sustains the lowly; * the wicked He casts to the ground. P: Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; * sing praise with the harp to our God. All: Who covers the heavens with clouds, * who provides rain for the earth; P: Who makes grass sprout on the mountains * and herbs for the service of men; All: Who gives food to the cattle, * and to the young ravens when they cry to Him. P: He delights not in the strength of the steed, * nor is He pleased with the fleetness of men. All: The Lord is pleased with those who fear Him, * with those who hope for His kindness. P: Glory be to the Father. All: As it was in the beginning. The celebrant then chants: Exorcism against Satan and the apostate angels In the name of our Lord Jesus + Christ and by His power, we cast you out, every unclean spirit, every devilish power, every assault of the infernal adversary, every legion, every diabolical group and sect; begone and stay far from the Church of God, from all who are made in the image of God and redeemed by the precious blood of the divine + Lamb. Never again dare, you cunning serpent, to deceive the human race, to persecute the Church of God, nor to strike the chosen of God and to sift them as + wheat. For it is the Most High God who commands you, + He to whom you heretofore in your great pride considered yourself equal; He who desires that all men might be saved and come to the knowledge of truth. God the Father + commands you. God the Son + commands you. God the Holy + Spirit commands you. The majesty of Christ, the eternal Word of God made flesh + commands you; He who for the salvation of our race, the race that was lost through your envy, humbled Himself and became obedient even unto death; He who built His Church upon a solid rock, and proclaimed that the gates of hell should never prevail against her, and that He would remain with her all days, even to the end of the world. The sacred mystery of the cross + commands you, as well as the power of all the mysteries of Christian faith. The exalted Virgin Mary, Mother of God + commands you, who in her lowliness crushed your proud head from the first moment of her Immaculate Conception. The faith of the holy apostles Peter and Paul and the other apostles + commands you. The blood of the martyrs and the devout intercession of all holy men and women commands you. Therefore, accursed dragon and every diabolical legion, we adjure you by the living + God, by the true + God, by the holy + God, by the God who so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but shall have life everlasting; cease your deception of the human race and your giving them to drink of the poison of everlasting damnation; desist from harming the Church and fettering her freedom. Begone Satan, you father and teacher of lies and enemy of mankind. Give place to Christ in whom you found none of your works; give place to the one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church, which Christ Himself purchased with His blood. May you be brought low under God's mighty hand. May you tremble and flee as we call upon the holy and awesome name of Jesus, before whom hell quakes, and to whom the virtues, powers, and dominations are subject; whom the cherubim and seraphim praise with unwearied voices, saying: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts! Next the choir sings the following antiphon and canticle: Antiphon: Today the Church is espoused to her heavenly bridegroom, for Christ washes her sins in the Jordan; the Magi hasten with gifts to the regal nuptials; and the guests are gladdened with water made wine, alleluia. Canticle of Zachary Luke 1.68-79 P: "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel! * He has visited His people and brought about its redemption. All: He has raised for us a stronghold of salvation * in the house of David His servant, P: And redeemed the promise He had made * through the mouth of His holy prophets of old-- All: To grant salvation from our foes * and from the hand of all that hate us; P: To deal in mercy with our fathers * and be mindful of His holy covenant, All: Of the oath he had sworn to our father Abraham, * that He would enable us-- P: Rescued from the clutches of our foes--* to worship Him without fear, All: In holiness and observance of the Law, * in His presence, all our days. P: And you, my little one, will be hailed 'Prophet of the Most High'; * for the Lord's precursor you will be to prepare His ways; All: You are to impart to His people knowledge of salvation * through forgiveness of their sins. P: Thanks be to the merciful heart of our God! * a dawning Light from on high will visit us All: To shine upon those who sit in darkness and in the shadowland of death, * and guide our feet into the path of peace." P: Glory be to the Father. All: As it was in the beginning. Or instead of the "Benedictus" the "Magnificat" may be chosen. At the end of the canticle the antiphon given above is repeated. Then the celebrant sings: P: The Lord be with you. All: May He also be with you. Let us pray. God, who on this day revealed your only-begotten Son to all nations by the guidance of a star, grant that we who now know you by faith may finally behold you in your heavenly majesty; through Christ our Lord. All: Amen. Next he blesses the water: From here on the exorcism of salt and the prayer that follows it, the exorcism of water and the two prayers that follow it, the mixing of the salt and water and then the concluding prayer--all of these are the same as the ones used on pp. 395-97. V. Our help is in the name of the Lord. R. Who made heaven and earth. The exorcism of salt follows: Thou creature of salt, I purge thee of evil by the living + God, by the true + God, by the holy + God, by the God Who ordered thee through Eliseus, the prophet to be cast into the water to cure its unfruitfulness. Be thou a purified salt for the health of believers, giving soundness of body and soul to all who use thee. In whatever place thou art sprinkled, may phantoms and wickedness, and Satan’s cunning be banished. And let every unclean spirit be repulsed by Him Who shall come to judge the living and dead, and the world by fire. R. Amen. Let us pray. O Almighty, everlasting God! Humbly we implore thy boundless mercy that thou wouldst deign of thy goodness to bless + and sanctify + this creature of salt which thou hast given for the use of mankind. May all that use it find in it a remedy for soul and body. And let everything which it touches or sprinkles be freed from uncleanness and assault from evil spirits. Through our Lord. R. Amen. Exorcism of water: Thou creature of water, I purge thee of evil in the name of God + the Father almighty in the name of Jesus + Christ, His Son, our Lord, and in the power of the Holy + Spirit, that thou mayest be water fit to brace us against the envious foe. Mayest thou be empowered to drive him forth and exile him together with his fallen angels by the power of the selfsame Jesus Christ, our Lord Who shall come to judge the living and the dead, and the world by fire. R. Amen. Let us pray. O God, Who for man’s salvation dost dispense wondrous mysteries with the efficacious sign of water, hearken to our prayer - pouring forth thy benediction + upon this element which we consecrate with manifold purifications. Let this creature serve thee in expelling demons and curing diseases. Whatsoever it sprinkles in the homes of the faithful, be it cleansed and delivered from harm. Let such homes enjoy a spirit of goodness and an air of tranquility freed from baneful and hidden snares. By the sprinkling of this water may everything opposed to the safety and repose of them that dwell therein be banished, so that they may possess the well-being they seek in calling upon thy holy names, and be protected from all peril. Through our Lord. R. Amen. Now salt is thrice put into the water in the form of a cross, saying only once: May this salt and water be mixed together, in the name of the Father + and of the Son + and of the Holy + Spirit. R. Amen. V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Author of invincible strength and king of an unconquerable empire, ever the gloriously triumphant One! Who restrainest the force of the adversary, Who overcomest the fierceness of the devouring enemy, Who valiantly putteth down hostile influences! Prostrate and fearsome we beseech thee, Lord, consider kindly this creature of salt and water, make it honored, and sanctify it with the dew of thy sweetness. Wherever it is sprinkled in thy name, may devilish infection cease, venomous terror be driven afar. But let the presence of the Holy Spirit be ever with us as we implore thy mercy. Through our Lord, Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in unity of the same Holy Spirit, God, eternally. R. Amen. At the end of the blessing the priest sprinkles the people with the blessed water. (Lastly the "Te Deum" is sung (for the "Te Deum" and its oration see Renewal of the Marriage Vows). Te Deum We praise Thee, O God: we acknowledge Thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship Thee and the Father everlasting. To Thee all Angels: to Thee the heavens and all the Powers therein. To Thee the Cherubim and Seraphim cry with unceasing voice: Holy, Holy, Holy: Lord God of Hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of the majesty of Thy glory. Thee the glorious choir of the Apostles. Thee the admirable company of the Prophets. Thee the white-robed army of Martyrs praise. Thee the Holy Church throughout all the world doth acknowledge. The Father of infinite Majesty. Thine adorable, true and only Son Also the Holy Ghost the Paraclete. Thou art the King of Glory, O Christ. Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father. Thou having taken upon Thee to deliver man didst not abhor the Virgin’s womb. Thou having overcome the sting of death didst open to believers the kingdom of heaven. Thou sittest at the right hand of God in the glory of the Father. We believe that Thou shalt come to be our Judge. We beseech Thee, therefore, help Thy servants: whom Thou has redeemed with Thy precious Blood. Make them to be numbered with Thy Saints in glory everlasting. Lord, save Thy people: and bless Thine inheritance. Govern them and lift them up forever. Day by day we bless Thee. And we praise Thy name forever: and world without end. Vouchsafe, O Lord, this day to keep us without sin. Have mercy on us, O Lord: have mercy on us. Let Thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us: as we have hoped in Thee. O Lord, in Thee have I hoped: let me never be confounded. V. Blessed art Thou, O Lord, the God of our fathers. R. Praised, worthy and exalted above all forever. V. Let us bless the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost. R. Let us praise him and exalt him above all forever. V. Bless the Lord, O my soul. R. And forget not all he has done for Thee. V. O Lord, hear my prayer. R. And let my cry come to Thee. V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit. Let us pray O God, whose mercy is unlimited and whose goodness is inexhaustible, we thank Thee for all that Thou in Thy loving majesty hast given us. We ask that Thou, who always answerest those who pray, may in Thy mercy not abandon them, but prepare them to receive eternal rewards. Through Christ our Lord. R. Amen.
