I just joined the Church this Easter. I noticed that since I entered the process of becoming Catholic, I have been going through a lot of spiritual warfare. Is this normal?

Increased level of Spiritual Warfare

Response: It is not uncommon that when people begin to engage in behaviors the demons do not like, they may increase their attacks against such individuals. This is well known in the lives of the great saints. They were engaged in holy endeavors which threatened Satan and his minions, so they were often the brunt of demonic attacks.

In a similar way, whenever we start holy things the demons do not like, they may harass the individual in obvious or more hidden ways. We see this in pro-life ministries, other holy works, and also with people converting and/or entering the Catholic Church. The demons hate the Catholic Church because it was founded by Jesus, continues his presence and ministry, and rescues souls from the clutches of Satan. The Good News is that Jesus protects such souls and gives them special graces to continue on their graced journey.

I have heard it many times that when people begin the process to enter the Catholic Church or just begin to amend their lives, they will notice an uptick in demonic attacks. This is not always the case but it is not unusual. However, such souls should not be dismayed but trust in Jesus' help and protection. They should mention this to the priests and ministers of the program so that additional assistance may be provided. If they are experiencing some demonic attacks, a regimen of more intense prayer including deliverance prayers is likely warranted. Being the brunt of demonic attacks, in these instances, is a "back-handed" spiritual compliment and a sign that one is on the right road to the Kingdom of God.
